a bad thing and a good thing.

As Mark has informed me...

The governor of South Dakota has signed a law making it a crime for doctors to perform an abortion unless the woman's life would be endangered by giving birth...

South Dakota has made abortion a criminal act," Planned Parenthood said in a statement, saying it would challenge the law in court...

The new legislation signed by Rounds would not make an exception for cases of rape or incest.

What the fuck?

Find the CBC article here.

As for a good thing?

I agree that women should have the right to choose, but I also think that the governor was elected, and if you elect a pro-life governor, that's what you're gonna get.

Also, how does health insurance work in the US? Are you only covered within your state, or could you just drive to another state to get an abortion?

kate - i have no idea how it works in the states. but it would suck to have to drive to another state to have something like that done. i know that.

and your right about electing a governor who has a particular view and then being surprised. it just seems to crazy to me.

nicole - it IS so cute. i really like it. i wish i could make a picture like that. just swimmin and hangin with the water monsters, or whatever that thing is. the swimmers remind me of the print that kate m used to have hung up in our apartment. there is something really appealing about them. maybe i'll make cute pictures like that. maybe.

I was reading Dose magazine the other day and they had an article about the abortion law thing, and they had a photo of activists with like bandanas and black t-shirts and like, you know, activisty clothes. And I was like, oh, maybe they did vote and there are lots of pro-choicers in that state, or whatever, you know? Like, I started to think my reaction was too simple-minded and everything?

And then I read the caption below and it says, "Pro-Life Activists protesting outside an abortion clinic" or something like that. And I'm like all, what? And I keep reading "Pro-Life" over and over, you know, thinking I'm misunderstanding the word or something. But I was like, whoa, those people totally look like left-wing protesty types like they have in Halifax. It turns out, they have protesty types that are fundamentalist Christians and hate queers in the US. Isn't that crazy?? Bandanas and everything.

I dunno why I'm posting this on your blog, I'm gonna see you in like 4 hours.
